Cantine Amastuola is rooted in Masseria Amastuola, a 15th-century farmhouse in the "hundred farms" area of Crispiano, Puglia, first recorded in the 1400s among the properties of the Prince of Taranto. Since 2003 the estate has belonged to the Montanaro family, who set about restoring both the historic masseria and the land around it.
What makes Amastuola instantly recognisable is its vineyard-garden: in 2006, landscape architect Fernando Caruncho redesigned the estate's vines into soft, parallel waves stretching some 3km across the property, interspersed with 24 "islands" of centuries-old olive trees — some over 800 years old and more than 2.5 metres in diameter. The result is one of the most photographed vineyards in Italy, and a working expression of the estate's philosophy: organic farming that treats the landscape itself as part of the wine.
